"... Indeed I have played the fool and erred exceedingly.” I Samuel 26:21
Those were some of the last words King Saul spoke to David. After this the two never met again.
Not long after he was made king, Saul got himself entangled in a battle with the hostile Philistines. He had instructions to wait for the prophet Samuel to come perform the sacrifice before heading into battle! Samuel delayed and a panicked Saul illegally performed the sacrifice!! For this, God told him the throne would be taken away from him! 1 Samuel 13.
A couple of chapters later (chapter 15), God instructed the king to completely destroy the Amalekites! Saul did not fully obey this instruction. He chose to spare the Amalekite king and the best of the oxen, sheep, fatlings and lambs! God was displeased and reiterated that He had rejected Saul!
Saul spent a considerable number of years pursuing David to kill him for fear the latter would dethrone him. At some point in his reign when God went silent on him, Saul in desperation consulted a medium!
King Saul had a miserable time as king and it all began with an act of disobedience! When he said "I have played a fool", he was aptly describing his time as king of Israel.
Do not live your life pursuing the wrong things. Do not waste it pursing wrong emotions-jealousy, envy, blind ambition, etc. Do not live your life in disobedience to God and His commandments. Someone said, live your life such that your pastor does not have to lie at your funeral!
