You may have heard people (or maybe you) say things like "I don't trust people" or "I don't really like people". "I just like to keep to myself because I have been hurt before".
There are also those who slide in and out of church, never make any effort to get yo know people, build relationships or make some connection with others. Usually their reason is that they were hurt in the past by "church folk" so have become cautious! To be part of a church or any group means to be part of a community and being part of a community means trusting the others in the community.
Loners cannot achieve much on their own. In every sphere of life we need people, beyond that we need to learn to trust people.
Samson on my mind today. He had been hurt deeply and betrayed by the woman he loved. Now he had been captured by the Philistines, his worst enemies and it seemed like it was over for him. He had strayed far from the purposes of God and now it seemed God had left him.
His captors were elated for they had finally snagged their tormentor. They threw a lavish feast to celebrate their success. As they drank and made merry they decided to bring the prisoner Samson out to entertain them. Samson was now blind and bound in chains like a common thief. They sent a little boy to get him.
Samson had a different agenda though, he had devised a plan to kill all the Philistines gathered but he needed someone to help him execute that plan. He could not get to where he wanted to all by himself. So guess what? He had to trust again. He had trusted before and had been unforgivably betrayed but he had to trust another Philistine again in order to fulfill his purpose.
"Then Samson said to the lad who held him by the hand, “Let me feel the pillars which support the temple, so that I can lean on them.” "Judges 16:26
Firmly positioned in his spot, Samson turned to God one last time, asked Him for strength and pushed hard against those pillars. He killed more Philistines at his death than he did in his life!
We all need people and people need us. Whatever your hurts, your pains or your loss, may God help you to learn to trust again. Ecclesiastes 4:9 says two are better than one, for they have a good reward for their labor!
