The boy Samuel on my mind this morning. He was a miracle baby; his mother had him after a long period of barrenness. She prayed to God for him and God heard her. She promised to dedicate him to God "all the days of his life". So after Hannah weaned Samuel, she took him to stay with the priest Eli at Shiloh where Samuel served in the temple.
Eli's sons who were priests in the temple had lost their way, they committed abominations against the Lord and He was displeased with Eli and his sons. As a result, "... the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions." 1 Samuel 3:1. God still did not give up on His people. One night as the boy slept, God called him.
Three times God called Samuel, three times Samuel got up from his bed and went to Eli's side, thinking Eli was calling him. We do not once hear Samuel murmuring or being angry at the old man for disturbing his sleep three times. No eye rolling, no pretending not to hear. Each time he dutifully got up. He did not get weary of doing his duty of service by Eli and because of his diligence, obedience and good heart, he learnt how to hear God's voice. Eli realized on Samuel's third trip that it was God calling the boy and directed him as to what to say.
This brings to mind Paul's word to the Galatians. "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9.
Wherever you find yourself or whatever you are doing, work at it with all your heart; put in your best for there is great reward in doing good. Remember also that God rewards those who diligently seek Him! Be determined to give it your all today and always.
