"While shepherds watched their flocks by night;
All seated on the ground;
The angel of the Lord came down;
And glory shone around".
As the story goes, the angel told the shepherds that the Savior of the world had been born that day and asked them to go find Him! They set off at once and indeed found the baby Jesus as described by the angel. Afterwards they went around telling everyone who would listen about the extraordinary thing that had happened. "And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds." Luke 2:18
I love Christmas, the sheer wonder of the season, the festive feeling that permeates the atmosphere; the decorations, the carols, well and the gifts too. Add snow, make it a white Christmas and I am in my happy place. The reason for the season is also never lost on me.
The Bible tells us all those who heard the shepherds were amazed, they marveled, they were left in a state of wonder. What the Bible does not say is if the testimony changed them in anyway. Did they stop to ponder and ask how the story of this divine birth impacted them? Did any of them disrupt their plans and schedules to go find the baby and worship Him too? Or did they just stop at wonder?
Whatever you do this Christmas, do not let the why be lost on you. God came down in human form on this day. The Great I Am deigned to lay in a manger so He could save us from our sins and give us eternal life. He did this because He loves us. That is the real wonder of Christmas. Jesus still wants to be found, you know. Merry Christmas to you all!
