So last night we had dinner with a wonderful couple (fellow pastors). We made them choose the restaurant and they picked a nicely appointed one, Smith & Wollensky in Wellesley MA. The ambiance was great, food delicious, from the angry shrimp starters to the carrot cake dessert! Oh and the restrooms were well kept.
However, the star of the evening was not the exquisitely prepared meals, but our waitress Caroline! She was pleasant, attentive, offered impeccable service, smiling throughout-a genuine, sweet, warm smile that melted the heart. In fact so impressed were we that all four of us gave her hugs as we left. I promised her I would give her a good review on their website.
I do not know what goes on in Caroline's life and God knows being a waitress can be quite a painful, thankless job depending on the customers you encounter. This girl showed so much joy in what she was doing, it was a joy to watch her. As l watched her Colossians 3:23 came to mind, "And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men" and "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31
As you read this, you may be at work or getting ready to go to work to deal with some impatient bosses, annoying customers, arrogant clients. It may not even be your dream job; or it may be the last place you want to be. But as you do what you have got to do till you find what you want to do, may the joy of the Lord be your strength. Smile, attack your job with gusto, treat it like your dream job as you seek to glorify God in all you do. What is more important is that your smile may be all another person needs to experience to have her hope restored.
Whatever your situation, determine to smile today. After all your happiness or joy does not depend on external factors but comes from within. Let me add this: "A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." Proverbs 17:22
As we walked out of the restaurant our friend Pastor Agabus commended Caroline for her smile and her response was just amazing. She said "oh thank you, at least that's one of the things I can control". And that's the truth.
