Shortcuts can be very useful. Cheat sheets can help us navigate a complicated concept. Quick meals are beneficial for days you do not have the time or energy to whip up gourmet foods. Some shortcuts though, can get us into trouble and all sorts of unpleasant situations. We usually use shortcuts to bypass processes which may be long, excruciating, arduous and painful.
There are times when shortcuts can get us to our ultimate destination but we may pay a higher price that ends up taking the joy out of the seeming victory won. I do not think anybody likes pain; yes we will go through pain if we must but if there is a way to bypass or completely avoid pain and still get the results we want, most of us will take that option.
Jesus came into the world to save it and reconcile all of us back to God. Before He was born, His purpose was set: to die for the redemption of mankind. It was not going to be a nice and easy death but a disgraceful and torturous death. He was going to feel every pain meted out to Him till He gave up the ghost.
So right after He was baptized and confirmed as the Messiah, the Holy Spirit drove Jesus into the wilderness to fast for forty days as He prepared to launch His ministry. The devil showed up after the fast and offered Jesus a shortcut to get the results He came for!! He took Jesus to a very high mountain and "showed Him all the kingdoms of the world" "and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” " Matthew 4:9
That must have sounded good to a man who was tired, weak and hungry after a prolonged fast. If He could just bow to Satan and receive the kingdoms (peoples) He came to die for and at the same time avoid the mindblowingly painful death ahead of Him, why not? It looked like an attractive proposition, a two-fold blessing huh? Almost a godsend shortcut!!
Jesus of course emphatically refused this "magnanimous" offer and backed His decision with scripture. And because He refused to take a shortcut, we can all lay claim to the salvation He won for us and are guaranteed a place in Heaven.
May God give us all wisdom to discern when to take a shortcut and when to go through process. May He clearly show us the dangerous shortcuts to avoid, however promising they look.
