Power In His Presence
The presence of God provides the reality of the totality of God, a revelation of God. In His presence, we enjoy the person of God in fellowship, the exhibition of His majesty and glory; the exposition of Himself. The ark of God is symbolic of the abiding and residential presence of God - Noah’s ark, Ark of the Covenant. The ark bore record of God’s presence, mercy and testimony.
David despite his shortcomings, was favored by God. Psalm 89: 20 “I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him.” David was beyond the ordinary laws that stopped men. Isaiah 55:3 suggests that David operated under divine exemption. David is important for the growth and understanding of the things of God. Acts 13:34 reveals Jesus Christ walked in the sure mercies of David.
Abindadab, the father of nobleness, was a Levite in whose house the ark of the covenant was deposited after having been brought back from the land of the Philistines (1 Sam.7:1 ). It remained there 20 years, until David removed it. (2 Samuel 6:1) David orders for the Ark of the Covenant to be moved to Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 6:6-7 “When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.” The danger of carrying or growing familiar with the presence of God is the inability to give due regard to His presence. Uzzah (strength) and Ahio (friend of God) are reminiscent of those who begin to take God for granted. Though grace abounds, we are admonished not to abuse it.
2 Samuel 6:9 - “David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, "How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?" Despite David’s knowledge of God, he revered Him. The knowledge of God is restricted to what He has revealed and written in His Word. Regardless of the heights we attain in our spiritual life or the levels we ascend in our physical life, may we never take God in vain.
Spurred by confusion and fear, David places the ark, the presence of God, in the home of Obed-Edom the Gittite. (2 Samuel 6:10) Though he dwelled in the region of lepers, Obed-Edom began to prosper as God blessed him and his entire household. The presence of the ark in Obed-Edom’s home attracted the blessings of God.
David finally begins to acknowledge the proper principles and procedure for carrying the presence. 1 Chronicles 15:2, ‘Then David said, "No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the LORD chose them to carry the ark of the LORD and to minister before him forever."’ David begins to demonstrate an understanding of what God has prescribed in His Word. To carry the presence, know and adhere to the Word. Ignorance of scripture will leave you bankrupt. The Word is the authority, the Spirit is the power. Absent the authority, power cannot function. Understand the authority that permits the use of power.
To carry the presence of God, sanctify yourself. 1 Chronicles 15:12 - He said to them, “You are the heads of the Levitical families; you and your fellow Levites are to consecrate yourselves and bring up the ark of the LORD, the God of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it.” Do not contaminate your spiritual walk merely because the conduct or lifestyle is not explicitly written in scripture. Determine to walk right with God. (Heb. 12:14).
In verse 13 of the scripture, David perceives that the anger of the Lord is as result of his failure to consult God about the proper order. Everything in the house of God must be executed in due order. Order is of utmost importance to God. (Genesis 1) God came not simply to create, but to establish order on Earth. 2 Chronicles 1:8- Solomon demonstrates his understanding of order and fatherhood thus activating God’s reward; the throne of David. Even in death, order is important. In 38:1, Hezekiah is instructed to set his house in order for death was imminent. Spiritually, it is a mistake to die in chaos. Death without due order is improper.
To carry the presence, walk in due order. Organize and have structure in your life. The presence will not be manifested devoid of due order. Refrain from rebellion; rebellion is an attempt to usurp due order without justification. Rebellion is akin to witchcraft. (1 Samuel 15:23) Rebellion can cause great pain; Uzziah improperly burned incense and leprosy broke out. On his person. The king died not in his palatial glory but as a mere leper. (2 Chronicles 26:16) Let all things be done in due order. To carry the presence of God, know the Word and have the Spirit. Every word has a spirit and every spirit has a word. Appointed leaders must bear responsibility for carrying the presence. To carry the presence of God, have knowledge of the law- study God’s word. Leaders are readers; knowledge is not stagnated, knowledge is dynamic. To carry the presence of God, let grace work with the law of God in your life. To carry the presence of God, have an attitude of joy. Joy is not a matter of choice but of divine compulsion and provision. (Nahum 8:10) There is a constant supply of joy, determine to always maintain an attitude of joy. To carry the presence of God, celebrate God in worship. The ministry of worship is extremely important to the presence. God dwells in the worship of His children. To carry the presence, ignore distractions and focus on God’s instructions. (2 Samuel 6:16) To carry the presence, learn how to sacrifice. In your sacrifice lies great reward. Some miracles require sacrifice, a memorial that provokes God to bring the miracle into manifestation. (Acts 10:31).
The presence David was looking for offered him a promise that secured his destiny and legacy. It secured his throne against any attack eternally. (1 Chron.17). There is power in the presence of God. As David did, may we seek to bring His presence into our lives, for in his presence we are guaranteed the power to be all that God intends for us to be and we desire to become.
