Jesus told a parable about ten virgins who were invited to a wedding feast in Matthew 25. He called five wise and five foolish. They all took lamps containing oil. The wise went a step further to take extra oil. For whatever reason the bridegroom delayed and they all fell asleep. At midnight a cry went up that the bridegroom was in. The virgins woke up and got their lamps ready. At that point the foolish five realized they did not have enough oil. Then they asked the others to share their oil with them. The wise five refused to share because if they did there would not be enough for all of them; and all ten of them would miss the opportunity to see the bridegroom. So they said no!
Learn to say no to some people. The five with oil might have come across as mean but their refusal to share was necessary in order for them to fulfill the purpose for which they went to the banquet in the first place. A parasite is defined "as a person who receives support, advantage, or the like, from another or others without giving any useful or proper return,..."
There may be some people in your life or around you who just take and give nothing back to you or othes. They add no value to your life and they drain you physically, emotionally, mentally and even spiritually. The last month of the year is a good time to identify these ones and say no to them. Be determined not to carry them into the coming year.
Yes, be kind, be generous, be sacrificial but set boundaries especially for those who may want to take from you all the time, take advantage of your good heart while doing nothing to help themselves or improve their lot. Tell them to go buy their own oil!
