No Heavy Lifting
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30.
These words were spoken by Jesus as He invited people to come to Him and to come to repentance. In these verses Jesus contrasted His burden and yoke with that of the Pharisees or the old order assuring His listeners that what He preached was a doctrine of grace and not of works. The old covenant required a strict observance of the law. This was a heavy burden as noone could achieve that level of perfection. In Christ's coming, His death and resurrection, He fulfilled the law and in so doing relieves us from the heavy burden of fulfilling every single one of the law.
However, what Jesus offers us is not devoid of burdens and yokes. He does not call us to a life free of commandments neither has He freed us to live anyhow. He said in John 14:15, "if you love me, keep my commadments.". However His burden is light and yoke easy because He did all the heavy lifting when He died on the cross and so we do not have to do it by our own strength. Jesus provides the enabling grace to live in obedience to His word. God has given us the Holy Spirit to assist us and make our walk with Him easy.
Jesus calls us to be perfect just as God our father is perfect. Paul starts Ephesians 5 by asking us to be imitators of God and goes on to explain what it means. Yes, there are rules and principles to live by as you live for Christ . We must constantly strive to be more like Christ with the help of the Holy Spirit.
This morning ask the Holy Spirit who is out helper to help you live in obedience to God. With Him on our side our light burdens and easy yokes become even more easy and way lighter.
