There is a saying that God is never late, never early but always on time. Ha! That can be a hard pill to swallow when you can hear all manner of clocks ticking, when you are tired of same old, same old and desperately need a change. The song "I don't mind waiting" has a nice ring to it but let us be honest, waiting is not always easy or pleasant.
Martha and Mary on my mind this morning. Their beloved brother falls sick and initially they are pretty chill because Jesus the mighty healer is their BFF so yeah, they will send Him a message, He will come, say a few words, touch their brother and he will be up an about again. Errm, that does not happen. "So, when He [Jesus] heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was." John 11:6. Woooow.
The sisters watched their brother's condition deteriorate till he gave up the ghost. They buried him and then Jesus strolled in. We would say His timing sucked but He was just on time. Martha's words to Jesus summed it all up: "...“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died." John 11:21. In other words you are late bud!!
Four days after Lazarus had died, Jesus raised Him from the grave. Jesus needed to prove a few points: to increase the faith of His disciples, to prove God's power once again to those gathered, to show them that He was the resurrection and the life and had power over death.
King Saul gets ready to face the Philistines in yet another battle. He is required to wait for the prophet Samuel to come offer the burnt offering before they head out to fight. Samuel does not show up within the time he has set. As the Israelites begin to scatter, quake with fear and hide, King Saul gets nervous and decides to unlawfully offer the sacrifice himself. As soon as he does Samuel appears. "And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God..."
I Samuel 13:13. God tested Saul's obedience and he failed the test.
There is always a purpose to God's timing. He holds the seasons and times in His hands, He is sovereign and has it all planned out well. When we mess with God's timing, things rarely go well. A thousand years is like a day and a day is like a thousand years to the Lord. Now that does not sound comforting when you have three score and ten years and hopefully another ten to live!! That said let us trust God's timing, He will only give and do what is best for you and I. He is not limited by time but understands how important time is to us and He will be on time. Do not rush ahead of Him and crash.
