Idle Words

Jesus had just finished healing a demon possessed man who was both blind and mute. It was an occasion for jubilation for the man been liberated from great bondage and could now live a wholesome life. While some the onlookers stared at Jesus in awe and wondered if He was indeed the messiah, the Pharisees scornfully, dismissively and carelessly remarked, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.” Matthew 12:24

Sheer balderdash!! Clearly they did not think before speaking and as Jesus asked them, how could the devil cast out the devil? They were so full of themselves, clinging fiercely to their religious beliefs, unwilling to yield to the new thing God was doing through Christ, and that resulted in such loose talk.

Jesus lectured them for a bit about being careful not to blaspheme the Holy Spirit making them aware that "...for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment." Matthew 12:36

Idle words mean useless, unprofitable, careless, empty, foolish, shallow, worthless, unnecessary words or talk. Some of us just open out mouths and speak whatever comes out without giving it much thought. We think just saying things "as they are" is cool and means we are bold.

Knowing we will be accountable for every idle word we speak should make us pause, think, think again before we speak. We cannot just speak and not care about what we say because we are angry, unhappy, feeling superior, hurt or just joking.

We already know words are powerful and beyond its power, we will also answer for every loose talk we engage in. Let us choose our words carefully and pray this prayer with David today and every day: "Set a guard, O Lord , over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips." Psalms 141:3.

Blessings.

Love, Lady Monica ❤
