2 Samuel 11 opens like this, "In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army...But David remained in Jerusalem. One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful,"
The king sent for the beautiful married woman, slept with her and got her pregnant. Then he concocted an elaborate plan to pin the pregnancy on her husband and when that failed the king had her husband killed. It all began with David idling at home when he should have been at war!
I am certain you have heard the expression, "the devil finds work for idle hands". Truer words were never spoken! Though we all need moments of rest when we do nothing, it is important to occupy yourself when your moments of rest are over. It is important to fill your time with purposeful activities. Take a walk, read a book, write a blog, get together with some friends! I have known a few people who got themselves into unnecessary entanglements because they did not know how to handle their free time or master their loneliness and therefore wandered into wrong beds and wrong communications. Many have idled on the internet and chanced upon a wrong website, a wrong chat room and then their woes began!
King David did not plan to sin, he just happened to be idling around his palace, saw and stopped to look at what he should not have looked at. When you find yourself idling, do well to seek some activity to do. If you do not, the devil will find work for you!
