His Mysterious Ways
Pondering on God's ways this dawn as I look at a few of Jesus' acts while on earth. It is easy to think that because God dealt with your neighbor in one way, He will come through for you in the same manner. It is actually encouraging to see God perform a miracle you are looking for for someone because "if He has done it for him He will do it for me". In the end God will take us to a good place but the means by which He gets us there differs from one to another.
So in Mark 10, blind Bartimaus screams himself hoarse till he gains Jesus' attention and implores the latter to heal him. "Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road." Mark 10:52
In Mark 8 when another blind man is brought to Jesus to be healed. This time He makes mud out of his spittle and sand and rubs it on the man's eyes. The man's eyes open but he does not see clearly so Jesus touches his eyes a second time for his sight to be fully restored. Surely Jesus did not need a two-step process to complete the healing yet, He chose to do so. Why? It is a mystery.
In the same vein when Jesus encounters a leper in Matthew 8, who asked for healing "...Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “... be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed." Matthew 8:3, however He does not touch the ten lepers, He directs them to “...Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed." Luke 17:14.
In these four accounts, the end result was the same: healing. The means were different.
Only God knows why He does what He does in the manner He does it. He knows what we need at any given moment and why it must be done in a certain way. Ultimately He wants to draw us closer to Him and to teach us to trust and depend on Him. We will not always understand Him for He has covered Himself with thick clouds (Psalm 18:11). God reveals as much of His plans and of Himself to us as we can handle at any particular time. Yes, He moves in mysterious ways to perform His wonders but what is not a mystery is that God has good intentions for us. I do not need to know everything. I can breathe, relax, rest, sleep knowing God knows everything and He is on my side.
