Jesus' earthly ministry was coming to an end as He prepared to die. He had preached many sermons and performed countless miracles. A lot of people had flocked to Him. He had gained many followers and many opposers too. His chief detractors were the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law. They seized every opportunity they could get to discredit Jesus' ministry publicly.
"Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved human praise more than praise from God." John12:42-43
Thought these Jewish leaders/authorities believed in Jesus, they would not be caught dead expressing their support in public. When Nicodemus, Pharisee and a member of the Jewish Council wanted to see Jesus and ask questions, he did it at night under the cloak of darkness.
We too may be tempted to hide our faith. We may be tempted to keep the fact that we are followers of Jesus, go to church and love Jesus to ourselves. Maybe out of fear of being ridiculed or discriminated against; out of shame or just so we can gain acceptance in some circles and gain the praise of men!
Our faith is not meant to be hidden though. If we are the light of the world and salt of the earth, how can we hide? Jesus was clear when he said in Matthew 10:32-33 that He will acknowledge those who acknowledge Him but will deny those who deny Him before men when He goes before His father in Heaven.
Being a believer is a beautiful thing. It is the most important decision you will ever make. When you have made a good decision you want everyone to know and to want to do what you have done! Do not hide your faith or deny Jesus through your actions, words or lifestyle.
Hidden faith is no faith.
