Good Isn't Enough
I was introduced to a fine, well mannered young man and I asked the person who introduced us if the young man was a Christian. He did not give me a straight yes but said his friend has good morals. I said "well, good morals alone won't get anyone to Heaven so I'm going to convert him". The young rich ruler is my muse today. He was also a fine young man with good morals, it seemed. Refer to Matthew 19:16-22, Mark 10:17-22, Luke 18:18-23.
He came to Jesus to ask how he could inherit eternal life. Jesus first pointed him to the commandments and the man was quick to respond that he had kept them since he was little. Jesus then asked him to go sell all he had and come follow Him. Suddenly the young man felt deflated, his face fell and he walked away from Jesus very sad because "he was extremely rich".
Like many people, the young man thought his good works were enough to buy him eternal life. He thought that somehow being a good person was all it took to settle his account with God. He found out that the external works were not enough without internal surrender.
His heart was still far away from God. He wanted to come God on his own terms and when Jesus told him to shift his heart from his wealth to God; come to God on God's terms, he could not accept it.
Even if we could we would not have enough good works to buy our way to God. Salvation is a free gift but it demands our our souls, our lives, our all. So yes, do good works but come to Christ too and make Him your savior because your good works alone just will not cut it!
