Go Tell John

Matt 11:3 is one of the verses that fascinates me greatly. I will reproduce it in a minute. John the Baptist was born with one main purpose: to prepare the way for Jesus, the Messiah. Luke 1:13-17. John was a firebrand preacher and declared his message of repentance without fear or favor. People loved him nonetheless and would flock to the wilderness to hear him. He baptized Jesus and announced Him as the Messiah.

In line with his character, he spoke against King Herod's marriage to his brother's former wife and this landed him in prison. Around the same time Jesus was doing His ministry.

While in prison, John seemed to have suffered a crisis of faith or had a moment of doubt about who Jesus was and that is where my verse comes in. "John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”" Matthew 11:2‭-‬3 NLT.

He had introduced Jesus to the world. John 1:29. He had heard all that Jesus was doing and yet still sent messengers with that question. Perhaps his station or his circumstances at the time made Him wonder if really Jesus was who he thought He was! Perhaps he had other expectations of what the Messiah should be doing. Or maybe he expected the Messiah to get him out of jail. We will not know what necessitated that question but I believe where he found himself had something to do with it!

Do not miss what God is doing around you because of what you are going through. Do not overlook His provision because it is not packaged in the way you expect. God is still God no matter your situation and He invites you to still trust Him even if you do not understand what He is doing or where He is going.

Jesus' response to John's question was pretty straightforward. "... “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen— the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.”" Matthew 11:4‭-‬5 NLT

May the Lord open your eyes today to see what He is doing around you and may that encourage you in whatever situation you find yourself!

Blessings
