To carry a disabling health condition for thirty eight years is no joke. Year after year this lame man desired to get well but did nothing about it. He was hoping that one day someone would be kind enough to push him into the pool when it was stirred. Well, that did not happen.
Along came Jesus to the Pool of Bethesda one fateful day. He saw the man and asked him a simple question, "...“Do you want to get well?”John 5:6. I was expecting a simple yes or no but we got an excuse "“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” John 5:7
To me that was not enough of an excuse for him to keep staying at the pool and doing nothing about his condition. Could he perhaps have crawled a little closer towards the edge of the pool everyday? So he would be close enough to just tip over when the angel came to stir the water. I wonder.
What excuses are you making to keep staying down; to keep that same stinky attitude; to remain promiscuous, quarrelsome and rude. What excuses are keeping you in the same place you have been for years? Yes, you have endured some hardships and abuses, people have not been kind to you, you come from a terrible background, etc. You have also been a Christian for a minute and it is time to shed some dead skin.
Like Jesus told the lame man, I am also urging you to “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” Walk in a different direction. Walk towards better. You have Christ in you, nothing should keep you down. Get up!!
