Gates V. Walls
Yesterday I had a conversation with one of my girls and she told me about how past hurts and pains have made her build walls around her heart! Later in the evening, in another conversation with Rev. Mary Ofosu Appiah, walls came up again she said something that resonated with me, that we should build gates not walls around our hearts.
Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Emphasis on the first part.
It is not unusual for us to vow never to let people hurt us again, or let anyone come too close to us again, etc, but God wired us for relationships and connections-all kinds-superficial as well as deep connections. Stuff will happen and people will hurt us but in spite of that, we still need people and we need love!
The command is to guard your heart, not wall it! Gates help guard our valuables, protect us and at the same time afford us the chance to regulate access. We determine who to let in and who to keep out! Gates protect us from intruders and allow us to choose when to close and open them!
Keeping your walls up because of bad past experiences can prevent some good and loving people from coming into your life and heart. Do not let good people go because of walls! Tear them down and start building gates! God Himself said it and I agree, that it is not good for man (or woman) to be alone! There is only so much one can do but two can put to flight a whopping ten thousand! Remember, gates not walls!
