This is one of those words or concepts that gets us to sit up every time. It is pretty complex. What is destiny? Who determines your destiny? Is your destiny set? Can it be changed? Do you control your destiny? Let us attempt to answer these.
Of the many definitions of destiny, I like this better: "your future or pre-ordained path for your life." If it is pre-ordained, does it mean then that you have no control or no say in how you or your life turn(s) out?
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11. These words were spoken to the Israelites while they were in exile. Though their bad choices had landed them in some hot water, God was assuring them that He had plans to still get them to a good place.
The late Dr. Myles Munroe said "Destiny is established but not guaranteed. You must choose God's choice for you." In other words though a good destiny is guaranteed for you, you still have choices to make that will determine whether you will fulfill destiny or not. As Christians we know God's plan is to give us a good future/end, however we have a part to play. We must choose our chosen destiny; we must choose God choices for us. God created us with the ability to make moral choices. If we make bad choices we cannot expect to reap good consequences. Knowing you have a good destiny determines your decisions.
In the bible we see how God allowed people to make their choices. Adam and Eve were allowed to make their choices, Cain was allowed to make a choice etc. Life is about choices and what and how we choose will certainly affect our future and our destiny. So yes the end is set but the pathway to the end is filled with choices and decisions and desires and will, etc.
In order to stay on course to get to the future God has for you-which is good- you must stay close to Him, ask Him to direct your walk, ask Him for grace to choose His choices for you. Ask Him for wisdom to make the right decisions knowing that James 1:5 says "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." What choices will you make today? This week? This month? This year? Yep, you have the ability to influence your destiny.
