When we met David he was a young shepherd boy cast to the wilderness to take care of his father's flock. His father had pretty much forgotten about him. God had not. He picked David up and anointed him as king. God allowed David to kill a giant trained soldiers ran from and then placed him in the palace to serve the king as He prepared David for the throne.
While King Saul haunted David like a common criminal, God was with him and orchestrated his every escape. Saul finally died and David came to the throne. He fought many battles as king and won all of them. David was surrounded by good, loyal and valiant men and he was feared and revered by neighboring nations! God favored him greatly! David loved God too and was super grateful for what He had done in his life.
From God's own mouth: "And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth."
II Samuel 7:9 NKJV
David got comfortable though and let his guard down quite a bit. In II Samuel 11, he was home in his palace "at the time when kings go to battle". He chose to stay behind and sent his army commander to lead the forces into battle. While roaming in the palace at night he spied the married Bathsheba bathing, sent for her, slept with her, got her pregnant and killed her husband to cover up his misdeeds!
Why did he not just go to war with his army!!! He had gotten comfortable. Everything was working in his favor. Then came these foolish decisions!
It happens to us too. We chase after God, harass Him, pray earnestly, fast religiously, consistently show up in church when we want something from him. The moment God grants us that healing, that job, the marriage, the child we get comfortable and our commitment level reduces. As soon as we feel "we have arrived", we start making all manner of excuses and find all types of reasons why we can no longer be "on fire" like we used to!
As God told the Israelites, be careful that when all is going well with you, you do not forget your God. Be careful that you do not forget your first love or lose your zeal because you have become comfortable!
