Everyone wants a reliable friend, sister, brother one you can count on any day, rain or shine. Everyone needs someone who will stand with him/her through thick and thin. Everyone wants a friend with whom he/she can freely share secrets and important issues. We all need at least one such person in our lives.
However as humans, we do not always measure up to such high standards and sometimes time and circumstances can get in the way of friendships and relationships. People can change and loved ones can become enemies or distanced from each other. Best friends become former best friends. As we do life, our own personal issues and tragedies or even successes do not always allow us to be the reliable friends, sisters and brothers that we once were. We let each other down, sometimes not even intentionally. Our best intentions and best efforts are usually just not good enough. We are only human and flawed. Putting your complete trust in another person can lead to disastrous consequences. He/she is only human.
Hebrews 13:8 points us in another direction, to the one who does not change; the one who loves us unconditionally and whose promise to stand with us does not depend on or is not affected by how He feels on a particular day, what you said to or about Him, your station in life, etc. He does not wash His hands off you because you offended Him; He does not reject you because you did not keep your word. He remains the same as you and I keep changing.
The scripture says "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." What comforting words. What blessed assurance. We can freely put our trust in Him and know that He will never let us down. There is a part of a hymn I like that says of us and Jesus:
"We blossom and flourish
As leaves on a tree
And wither and perish
But nought changeth thee"
Jesus is your refuge and strength, He is your strong tower, He is dependable and reliable. Put your trust in Him for He remains the same. "It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in humans." Psalm 118:8.
