And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, ...” Genesis 2:16-17.
The fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil is the most expensive meal in human history as it cost us everything. It all started because Eve chose to listen to the wrong person and to focus on what she did not have or was not allowed to have. The one thing that she was forbidden from having was the thing she chose to focus on. God had given Adam and Eve access and permission to eat of every tree except that one tree. God set the menu for them but Eve decided the set menu was not good enough and so she would order from a separate menu.
We are more like Eve than we think. Anytime we make a list of what we lack and fail to list what we have, the Eve in us is at work. Anytime we think that we know better than God, Eve is at work in us. When we focus so much on the one thing we cannot have or do not have, we miss the opportunity to enjoy what we have.
King David had many wives but once he spotted the one woman, the wife of a subordinate and like Eve, looked and saw that Bathsheba was pleasing to the eye, he took her to bed. Dire consequences followed; acrimony, chaos, revenge and death, rained on his house. Somehow what is forbidden seems more attractive but if you pursue it, nothing but trouble will result. Our attentions and affections are affected by the attraction of the elusive fruit just beyond our reach; nothing else matters but the plucking of that fruit.
Eve's attraction to and appetite for the forbidden fruit, led to a break in fellowship with God, imputed sin to all of us and cost God His beloved son's life in order to restore us to Himself. It was huge. Yours might not affect all of mankind but will affect you, those close to you and some far off too.
We must not get so fixated on the one thing we lack or cannot have and pierce ourselves with many sorrows. As the song goes, if we will take a moment to count our blessings and name them, one by one, we will be surprised at how blessed we truly are. Today, choose to count your blessings.
